Uplift Our Women

Man often forgets that they would not exist without a woman choosing to give him life.

We live in a society where large corporations use Photoshop to create the illusion of perfect women.   With total disregard for the effect this has on society, these corporations are only concerned with selling products. There is a profound cultural effect where our women now feel that they are not perfect, that they are not beautiful.

We live in a society where women are still under-represented at all levels of government. The United States trails behind much of the world- ranking 90th in the number of women in our national legislature. Decisions are being made at every level of the government without the input of over 50% of the population.  Not to mention all of the minority groups that are not represented in our legislature.
We live in a society where mass media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms. The collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader.

All of these thoughts became clear to us after we watched a film called Miss Representation.  It contains a very simple, yet impactful message; We all need to empower women and girls and provide them with new opportunities to realize their full potential.

Miss Representation debuted in the documentary competition at the Sundance Film Festival where it caught the eye of OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. It made its television premier as part of the OWN documentary film club in October 2011, with over 1.3 million people tuning in to multiple airings. More than two years later over 40 countries have screened the film in corporations, non-profits, religious groups, government organizations and communities are happening every day all over the world.

Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America.  The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

We are hosting a Local Screening:  There will be a local screening of Miss Representation on December 5th, 2013, AMC Cherry Creek Theater, 3000 E 1st Ave, Denver, CO 80206, 6:30 PM.  Tickets can be purchased at
